Data Driven Approaches for Informed Health Equity Action

Health and health equity have been elevated to a national and global priority for business, government, healthcare, and other sectors based on increasing evidence of their significant economic costs and impact on economic prosperity, resiliency, and economic and social well-being.

Many factors drive sources and impact of specific chronic conditions and disparities with substantial geographic variation across communities. New economic research at the metro level quantifies medical and productivity costs of specific disease conditions and the potential savings from interventions to improve health or reduce disparities. This research helps uncover which factors are driving the greatest disparities in outcomes and therefore which interventions may provide the biggest benefit for employers, communities, or other decision-makers. It also provides insights and metrics to assist business and community collaboratives to align incentives, take action, and track results for their communities or workforce.

Understanding and quantifying current costs and the economic and savings opportunities from interventions that reduce disparities or improve outcomes helps make the “community and business case” for action to address poor health and health disparities.
